VSB marks 11 schools for possible closure

The Vancouver School Board last night released a list of 11 elementary schools, predominately on the city’s East Side, that could potentially be closed to make up an $18-million budget shortfall.

The list includes six elementary schools — Bruce Elementary, Carleton Elementary, Hudson Elementary, MacDonald Elementary, Queen Alexandra Elementary and Seymour Elementary.

Five annexes were also named, and a sixth annex has previously been identified for potential closure.

According to a school board report, a plan will be drafted within two months that will recommend which of the schools should be closed, and outlines the public consultation process.

Consultation will likely take place this fall, to allow for a decision by the end of the year.

The closures would not take place until June 30, 2011, the end of the next school year.

Also recommended was that the district combine Britannia Elementary with Britannia Secondary into a K-12 school.
