A cat with a deformity, now named Romeo, found love after being left for dead in southeastern Spain despite being “too ugly.”

His siblings were already taken to homes, but Romeo was left behind. At least until director and co-founder of Santuario Compasión Animal Laura Llácer crossed paths with the stray kitten.

On Oct. 13, the sanctuary posted a video welcoming Romeo and announcing his new home. The translated message reads: “We were told nobody wanted him because he is ugly. But to us, Romeo isn’t ugly. He’s a little lovable kitten who loves to play like the rest of the cats. And his differences make him special.”

“We were surprised that people did not see that this was someone special,” Llácertold The Dodo.

And a special kitten deserves a special home – with Llácer and the other rescued animals at the sanctuary.

“Romeo is very, very affectionate and behaves differently than other cats,” Llácer said, The Dodo reported. “He remains a cat, but there’s something adorable in his behavior that reflects that lovely abnormality in appearance.

“Of course, he suffers a deformity, but that makes him different. That makes him unique.”

Romeo has been at the sanctuary for about a month, according to the video, and loves playing with his toys.

The sanctuary posted a bit about Romeo with the video. Translated, the message includes: “We hope that Romeo’s story will help end a lot of prejudices and teach us what is important, what unites us, the desire to live.”

And may we add: the desire to be loved.
