Weddings a couple affair

Future groom Jeff Skoczek expected the Calgary Bridal Expo to be full of women but he was surprised to see dozens of other grooms-to-be perusing dresses and dinnerware at the expo yesterday.

“I knew it would be busy with women — women love their weddings. But I thought for sure I was the only guy,” he joked.

Skoczek and his future wife Amber Burke got engaged in May and thought the expo would be a good start to figure out what they need to do to plan the wedding. “We are planning everything, start to finish, and I knew it would take a lot of planning, and a lot of money,” he added.

When asked how important the wedding dress selection is, the two exchanged giggles and glances. “I have a wedding gown in mind, but I wanted to see what my options were,” Burke said.

Skoczek wasn’t the only groom happily, or unhappily, tagging along with his future wife, according to expo co-producer Lenora Kingcott. She said she expected about 1,200 brides, and 3,000 guests total — 25 per cent of which she expected to be future brides.

“I think couples are paying for their own weddings these days, instead of the parents, so we see more men getting involved with their partners and planning the wedding together,” she said.
