A popular East Coast supermarket chain that is increasing its presence in Massachusetts announced on Tuesday that it will open its Chestnut Hill location in April.

Wegmans, known for its massive, maze-like stores with countless items and expansive prepared foods section, is set to open its second Massachusetts store on April 27 at Chestnut Hill Square off Route 9.

Ahead of the grand opening, the store will open its 10,500-square-foot second-floor wine, beer and spirits shop on March 29.

The Chestnut Hill location will be 80,000 square feet.

“The Greater Boston community has already welcomed us with open arms. We can’t wait to provide our Chestnut Hill customers with the incredible customer service and the unique shopping experience that people have come to expect from Wegmans,” Rich Boscia, the Chestnut Hill store manager, said in a statement.

Wegmans and former Mayor Thomas Menino announced plans last year for a supermarket at the Landmark Center in the Fenway neighborhood.

In 2011, Wegmans opened its first Massachusetts store in Northborough, which is the closest store to Boston until the Chestnut Hill opening. The launchwas said to have broken the store’s opening day record with 25,000 shoppers. The 140,000-square-foot store has 600 employees and a restaurant with seating for a few hundred. It is said to be the biggest grocery store in New England.

The Rochester, N.Y.-based company was founded in 1916 and has 83 stores in the Northeast and mid-Atlantic regions.
