On July 20 some 139 years ago B.C. joined confederation. It’s a bit of trivia and a reason to seek out some “authentic” B.C. food.
That means First Nations. Tucked along West Broadway you’ll find Salmon ‘n’ Bannock, which not only serves First Nations cuisine but sources organic ingredients wherever possible.
Most importantly, if you’re going to call yourself Salmon ‘n’ Bannock, you better serve some excellent salmon and bannock. In this, they’ve definitely succeeded.
I had the wild sockeye salmon burger on bannock ($15). The warm, buttery quick bread is the perfect place to hide the moist and perfectly cooked salmon. The caper mayo had me licking my utensils. Discreetly, of course.
Bonus: if you can’t stick around for lunch, you can get it to go. The only miss is a side dish of steamed fiddlehead ferns ($6) that sorely needs seasoning.
Portions are smaller than usual but the flavours are worth it. You’re paying for quality. This is real fare to be proud of.
