PRINCE ALBERT, Sask. – A statue of John Diefenbaker towered overhead as premiers from Western Canada and the North joined Saskatchewan natives marking an aboriginal Day of Action.
Dozens of First Nations people marched to the statue at Prince Albert city hall where the premiers are gathering for their annual conference.
The marchers said they want more consultation and inclusion in Western Canada’s economic prosperity.
They carried signs that said: “We are neighbours” and “Let’s share this land and its resources and wealth.”
Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall told the marchers it was fitting for the crowd to gather at the monument for Diefenbaker.
The former prime minister from Saskatchewan granted the right to vote to Canada’s aboriginal people.
