What OkCupid Users in Portland Say About Love and Money

What are Portland, Oregon, daters looking for in a partner when it comes to finances? To find out, NerdWallet teamed up with OkCupid to analyze an online survey of the dating site’s Portland area users.

OkCupid users inPortland buck the stereotype ofmen should be the bigger earner. In fact, 57.4% of men who were askedsaid they’d be “very comfortable” if their significant other made more money than they did. Women were on the same page, with 52.7% agreeing.

But the two genders differ when it comes to the importance of wealth in their relationships. Among men in Portland who were asked, 47.7% said that their date’s wealth was “not important at all,” while only 28.5% of Portland women said the same.

And Portland daters are split on their ideal match’s career ambitions. A solid chunk of each gender who were asked — 24.7% of men and 29.3% of women — said that they wouldn’t be able to tolerate a partner who was content withhis or her minimum-wage job anduninterested in higher-paying work. More than that, 34.3% of male OkCupid users in the area and 31.1% of women said that while the lack of ambition bothered them, it was ultimately none of their business. But women were less likely to be fine with their partner’s low career aspirations: Only 11.3% of those who were asked said that they didn’t mind either way, while 21.7% of men said the same.
