Don’t let the leprachuans and shamrocks fool you, although St. Patrick’s Day is an ode to Ireland, the holiday is an American tradition.

There is some debate as to whether the first festive St. Patrick’s Dayparade started in Boston or New York, but with more than 33 million Americans claiming Irish heritage, it’s a tradition that has spread throughout the country.

Besides the parades, St. Patrick’s Day festivities are defined by corned beef, cabbage, Guinness and partying.

But with Irish pubs on seemingly every corner, St. Patrick’s Day festivities can get a little competitive. Wallet Hub set out to find which U.S. city has the best St. Patrick’s Day festivities. It surveyed everything from cost to weather, to traditions to safety, concluding that the best city to celebrate Irish pride is Buffalo— we’re not sure if the leprachauns would agree, but that’s numbers for you.
