White Pages now by request only

Calgarians will have to let their fingers do the clicking instead of walking after Yellow Pages Group announced residential phone books are now available by request only.

Calgary joins other major Canadian cities Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Edmonton, Quebec City and Ottawa-Gatineau, according to spokesperson Perry Schwartz.

“People are increasingly turning to online and mobile to find their numbers and we want listings to be available to all users in the format of their choice,” Schwartz said.

Yellow Pages Group said they will print five million fewer phone books each year, which equals 3,500 metric tonnes of paper.

Green Calgary applauds the decision, executive director Geoff Braun said.

“That’s a significant amount of paper and energy that will be saved.”
