Critics and audiences are fawning over the big screen adaptation of Kevin Kwan’s 2013 novel, which finally hits theaters this week, and with so much hype over the film, it’s made us wonder: Will there be a Crazy Rich Asians 2?
The romantic comedy-drama is based off of the first book in Kwan’s trilogy, so there’s plenty more of the Crazy Rich Asians story to be told. Should the movie make a splash at the box office, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the studio greenlit a Crazy Rich Asians 2 in order to adapt the other novels in the trilogy, China Rich Girlfriend and Rich People Problems.
Here’s what we know so far about a possible Crazy Rich Asians 2.
Will there be a Crazy Rich Asians 2?
There’s been no official word yet about any plans to adapt the remaining books in the series, however, it sounds like the cast and crew of Crazy Rich Asians are down to work on a sequel should it ever happen.
“We would love to tell more stories,” director John M. Chu told E! News. “We’d love to have other people tell their stories as well. We’ll see, but it’s up to the people who show up.”
The film’s stars Henry Golding and Awkwafina also told Refinery29 that they “really don’t” know if a Crazy Rich Asians 2 will happen. We recently asked Kwan about the future of the franchise, and he gave a similar answer.
“For now, the Crazy Rich Asian story, I’m just putting it to rest,” he told Metro. “Who’s to say what happens 20 years down the line.”
Instead, Kwan would like to pursue penning other stories that don’t involve the over-the-top, lavish world featured in Crazy Rich Asians.
“I have so many more stories to tell, involving different types of people, different characters,” Kwan said. “I don’t want to keep writing about just crazy, rich people, quite frankly. I’ve done enough of that I think.”
He added, “I really also want to mine the archive and write about different types of people.”
So what’s next for the acclaimed author? Kwan revealed that he’s actually in the process of writing a television show which will be a change of pace from the world he built with the Crazy Rich Asians trilogy.
“I’m writing a TV series now, which hopefully will offer yet another spectrum of diversity,” Kwan said. “It’s very different.”
As for a Crazy Rich Asians 2, we’ll just have to wait and see.
