This woman is bringing a new meaning to the phrase “homegrown”, with her own brand of ‘breast butter’. You heard right. Michelle Cohn – aka WhatMichelleDoes – has taken to churning out her own ‘spread’ and then sharing with her 11,000 Reddit followers. The pre-school teacher from Rockville, Maryland posted, “I made butter with my breast milk. It was a lot of work!” The 26-year-old, who produced approximately 56 grams of her own ‘butter’, feasted on the dairy delight. Cohn tells Metro why she got into the business of ‘human breast butter’.
Why did you decide to make butter from your breast milk?
My husband took my daughter on a trip out of town. It was my first time away from her, and she is still breastfeeding. In order to make sure that I kept up milk production, I needed to express breast milk. I had the milk and was expressing it into a jar, when I remember making milk at a fair once by shaking milk. So I did it.
So you just shake it and the butter is ready?
Yes, it is very simple. Just put the milk in a sealed container and shake it!
How does it taste?
It was very sweet and creamy.
Do you not have any aversion to eating it?
Honestly, I had no problem eating it.
Does it have special qualities?
Yes, it is very nutritious.
How much butter can you produce a month?
I have no idea. So far, I have only tried twice and produced in total no more than two teaspoons. My milk is for my daughter, so when she is with me, I intend to continue to let her be the consumer.
What is the most difficult part of making it?
Because I have never pumped my breast milk and do not own a pump, the hardest part was hand-pressing the milk. It was not difficult but it was a bit time-consuming. The first time I made the butter, it required a lot of vigorous shaking.
How would you possibly name your breast milk butter brand?
If I were to brand it, I would call it “Breast Milk Butter” – it’s a simple name that would get the message across clearly!
