Workplace charity drive begins

Announcing a fundraising goal of $22 million, federal government employees and retirees launched their 2010 Government of Canada Workplace Charitable Campaign to benefit the United Way in the National Capital Region Thursday.

The campaign is a chance for public servants to come together and work towards one goal, said 2010 national GCWCC chairman Robert Fonberg.

Although giving to the campaign is a personal choice, “our gifts raise (others’) chances,” said Fonberg, who is the deputy minister of National Defence. “We all have different reasons, different motivations and different rationales.

When the campaign kicks off, I hope that all federal employees and retirees will take a moment to think about how fortunate we’ve been in our lives, about the people who’ve helped us get to where we are.”

Throughout the campaign, federal government departments and agencies will hold fundraising events to work towards this year’s goal. “The financial goal is certainly an ambitious one,” said Joan Highet, vice-president, campaigns with United Way Ottawa. “But it’s more than just money. It reflects the shared commitment.”
