WTC’s Liberty Park to open next week

The World Trade Center’s long-awaited Liberty Park will reportedly open to the public next week.

The one-acre elevated green space sits at a height of 25 feet above the ground and overlooks the 9/11 Memorial. A Port Authority spokesman told DNAinfo that an exact date for the opening will be announced later this week.

The park began construction in 2013. It sits atop a security center that protects the site against unauthorized vehicles. About $50 million was allocated to its construction by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

The St. Nicholas National Shrine, which will be located nearby, will continue construction and is reportedly slated to open in 2018. The shrine is in honor of the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, whichwas destroyed in the 2001 terror attack.

WTC officials have been documenting the park’s progress on their Twitter account, @WTCProgress.
