Yoga for the heavy headed

From heavy headed
to clear minded

If last night was a heavy one and you’ve woken up with a set of drums instead of a brain, the last thing you may want to do is get up and work out. According to Yogi Tara Stiles, completing about 10 minutes of a simple yoga sequence is enough to get you feeling a bit better; “just go easy and take it slow,” she says.

“These moves are designed to make you feel better and faster as they get the blood flow going and the twisting helps detox the liver. You will alleviate the ailments in the body and stimulate the nervous system,” explains Stiles.

Wringing out
the alcohol

One alcoholic drink (approx five ounces of wine, 12 ounces of beer) is metabolized in about one hour, so the amount still lingering in your system will depend on the quantities consumed. The sequence will help burn off a few extra calories, although low impact, the exercise will stimulate the release of endorphins, your feel-good hormones.

“The main thing is to focus on the breath, not necessarily getting into the finished version of the pose,” suggests Stiles.

Miracle recovery?

We’re not going to lie. There’s no better tip to reduce a hangover than not drinking so much the night before to limit the damage. Working out will make you feel better, not undo the pain. Her yoga sequence will really get your blood flow going and help you get the detox going.

“If you feel like you can, do the sequence for a bit longer and if you want more impact, get some cardio in and go for a run later on in the day,” says Stiles.
