Yotel: Micro-room hotel eyeing Boston expansion

Boston’s budding Seaport neighborhood could eventually be home to a hotel known for its micro-rooms and youthful vibe.

A developer of the Seaport Square project is proposing to locate a Yotel along Seaport Boulevard on the Innovation District.

A spokeswoman for the company said on Wednesday that there were no details to share, but said Yotel is actively looking to become part of the Boston community.

John B. Hynes III, managing partner of Boston Global Investors, told the Globe that the 11-story building would include about 300 rooms that range in size from 160 to 200-square-feet.

“It’s a high-quality finished product, and there is no wasted space,” Hynes told the Globe. “It’s great for a budget-conscious business traveler who’s popping in and popping out. You don’t pay for all these amenities you don’t use.”

Yotel has locations at airports in London and Amsterdam and near Times Square in New York City. It opened it first airport location in 2007 and its New York City hotel in 2011.

The company bills itself as providing visitors “a first-class hotel experience at a great value” with an emphasis on usability and simplicity. Lobbies and rooms are decorated with purple lighting and clean white design features. Rooms are referred to as cabins and the smallest rooms include a queen bed, toilet, stand-up shower, sink and work station.

“We bypass expensive traditional room service, mini-bars and coffee makers in favor of a ‘galley’ kitchen concept … accessible 24/7 on each floor,” the hotel wrote on its website.

It’s not yet determined how much it will cost to stay in a 200-square-foot Yotel room.Hynes told the Globe room rates have not yet been determined.

However, rooms during a weeknight stay at the New York City location in June and July were priced as low as $229.

By comparison, a 300-to-330-sqaure-foot king bed room at the Westin Boston Waterfront hotel started as $296.
