Young Herd centre nets two in a row

One of the Halifax Mooseheads’ top young guns is showing plenty of promise in the pre-season.

Andrew Ryan, a skilled six-foot-three centre who was considered a raw project when he was drafted 19th overall in June, continued to impress the Mooseheads’ coaching staff by scoring back-to-back first-period goals in Halifax’s 7-5 loss to the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles in Sydney yesterday.

“He looks really good — strong, fast, composed, and he played well both games this weekend,” said Mooseheads head coach and general manager Cam Russell. “He’s come into camp and played very hard and very well. He came here to make the hockey team.”

Gabriel Desjardins added a goal and an assist and Garrett Clarke and Carl Gelinas each scored singles.

Yesterday’s game was a rough one for the goaltenders, as Mathieu Corbeil (three goals on 12 shots) and Randy Chisholm (three goals on nine shots) shared the loss.

The Mooseheads, who also lost 2-1 to the Eagles on Saturday at the Forum, are expected to cut at least four players this morning from their 31-man roster.
