A new addition to the Calgary Zoo has staff going bananas.
The zoo was blessed with the first Colobus monkey ever born at the facility on Friday the 13th. The healthy white-coated female infant is the first baby of mother Mosi and father BK, and hasn’t been named yet.
“We were awaiting this birth with great anticipation and when I got to work at 6:30 a.m. last Friday I found that Mosi had successfully given birth to the infant without assistance,” zookeeper Garth Irvine said.
The zoo is happy that Mosi and another female in the troop, Roberta, share a close bond. Mosi even handed the baby to the other monkey to hold, which is uncommon.
“Mosi is a first-time mother and has a lot to learn, including how to carry her baby, but has taken good care of her and is quite protective,” he said,
Zoo visitors are welcome to visit the newborn but patience is needed as the family needs time to adjust, zoo officials said. The monkeys are located in the TransAlta Rainforest.
