After being hospitalized for weeks, a 12-year-old Brockton boy has succumbed to injuries sustained when he fell through a sheet of ice and was submerged in water in January.

Charles “CJ” Thompson and a 9-year-old friend fell through the ice on a frozen pond in Brockton behind Plouffe Academy on Crescent Street on Jan. 9, WCVB reported.

Oswald Benoit and several Brockton firefighters pulled the boys from the water, but Thompson had been submerged for several minutes, Enterprise News reported. After being pulled to safety, Thompson was in critical condition and regained a pulse while en route to the hospital.

The child was in a coma at Boston’s Tufts Medical Center before dying on Monday night, according to Enterprise News.
