Emma Stone is now Hollywood’s highest paid actress – but she’s pacing way behind the boys

Even though we are only in August, Emma Stone can already safely say that 2017 has been a good year. The 28-year-old not only picked up the Best Actress Academy Award for her turn in La La Land, but also became the highest paid actress in all of Hollywood over the last 12 months.

Emma Stone made $26 million pretax in Forbes’ 12 month scoring period, which allowed her to move ahead of last year’s top earner Jennifer Lawrence. That was a huge leap for Emma Stone; in 2016 she made just $10 million. The Hunger Games actress could actually only make it into third place on the 2017 list, as it was Jennifer Aniston that finished just behind Emma Stone in second place. Aniston made $25.5 million over the last 12 months.

But while Aniston’s roles in the likes of Storks, Office Christmas Party, The Yellow Birds, and Dumplin’ undoubtedly boosted her bank account, it was mostly her endorsement deals with Emirates airlines, Smartwater, Aveeno, and the fact that Living Proof, a hair-care line she owns a stake in, was sold for an undisclosed amount in December, 2016, that made her substantially richer.

Emma Stone was mainly able to increase her bank balance thanks to her role in La La Land, which ultimately grossed over $445 million around the world, while the upcoming Battle Of The Sexes, The Favorite and her reunion with Superbad’s Jonah Hill on Netflix’s Maniac also probably helped.

Jennifer Lawrence’s $24 million intake is well below her earnings of $46 million for 2016. But that’s reflected in her appearances in slightly smaller films like Darren Aronofsky’s mother! and the spy thriller Red Sparrow, rather than 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse and Passengers.

Who else made the list, though? Well, here’s a run-down of the top 10 highest paid actresses of 2017, all of whom made more than $11.5 million.

We’re still waiting for details on who was the highest paid actor of 2017, which will reveal whether or not Hollywood has actually made any progress when it comes to the pay disparity between the genders. But considering that last year’s winner Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson made $64.5 million between June 2015 and June 2016, there’s a good chance that the figures are going to make the movie industry look very bad.

In 2016 the 10 highest paid actresses in Hollywood were paid $205 million. That number has severely reduced this year, and is closer to $175 million. Meanwhile, 2016’s 10 highest paid actors made a total of $470 million. We’ll find out how much higher their combined income was over the last 12 months when Forbes announces their list at the end of the month.
