4 MTA workers injured in electrical explosion

A New York transit worker was brutally injured in an electrical explosion that rocked the Union Square station in the early hours of Thursday morning. Part of a maintenance crew working on the 4/5/6 line, the man was injured when a cable struck the line’s live third rail, causing a blast at around 3:30 a.m.

“A total of 4 workers were hurt,” MTA spokesperson Kevin Ortiz told Metro. “One worker sustained severe burns to his face, neck and legs (non life-threatening) and the other 3 workers sustained minor injuries to face and arms.All were removed to NY-Presbyterian Hospital burn unit.”

Regular service was restored to the Lexington line by 8 a.m.
