6 things we know about ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 7

HBO recently announced the release date for the new “Game of Thrones” episodes: July 16. Metro rounds up what we know so far about the penultimate season of the award-winning series inspired by George R.R. Martin’s books.

Four visions
This season, which will consist of only seven episodes, will have four directors: Alan Taylor, Jeremy Podeswa, Mark Mylod and Matt Shakman. This will be the first time Shakman has directed a GoT episode.

New faces
There will be nine new characters, including a general, a father, a warrior, two guards and a merchant. So far only Jim Broadbent, who will star as Master of the City of Oldtown, and singer Ed Sheeran have been confirmed.

One of the show runners, D.B. Weiss, says that this season will try to “figure out who Cersei really is and what she thinks.” On that note, one of the screenwriters adds that the female characters will have “a central role” in the upcoming season.

Characters come back
Joe Dempsie will return with his character Gendry. Apparently, he still intends to get the Iron Throne. David Bradley, according to information provided by his agents, will also be featured with his character Walder Frey.

Ice and flames
A live video unveiled on March 9, which shows a block of ice being melted by flames, announced the premiere date for Season 7. It was a metaphor for the inevitable collision between the living and the white walkers.

No Emmys
After winning 12 Emmy Awards in 2016, “Game of Thrones” will not be able to compete in 2017 since the organization asks that the applicants to release more than half of its episodes before May 31.
