Black Lives Matter protest shuts down Newbury Street

Hundreds of protsters marched along Newbury Street Saturday afternoon in solidarity with a national demonstration speaking out against police violence against the black community.

The national movement was sparked by the shooting death of an unnarmed black teenager by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri.

“Newbury Street Shutdown,” organized by Black Lives Matter Boston, unfolded around noon Saturday in an effort to disrupt “business as usual” in one of Boston’s biggest commerce centers.

“Our goal is to ensure that no one in our city can continue to ignore the crisis of racial profiling and police violence against Black and Brown people in Boston, Ferguson, and across the country,” organizers said in a Facebook page dedicated to the event, promisingsigns, chanting, music, and marching along Newbury Street.

“This action will make visible the attitudes and apathy that allow and justify the murder of Black people. We are going to interrupt the culture of silence and complicity,” the statement said. ” We ask, who do the police serve and protect? We insist, indict Darren Wilson NOW. We demand, don’t shoot in our name! Because Black Lives Matter.”
