Welcome to Boston, Superintendent Chang; here’s a shovel!
Boston has a new superintendent of schools, Dr. Tommy Chang, a top official now working for the Los Angeles public school system.
In a statement, Mayor Marty Walsh cheered the pick by the Boston School Committee, which voted 5-2 Tuesday night for Chang.
“I want to congratulate and welcome Dr. Tommy Chang as Boston’s selection for the new superintendent of public schools,” the mayor said.
“Dr. Chang will provide the leadership that our school system needs and I am confident that his innovative views on education will move our students forward. We need a transformative leader and that is Tommy Chang.”
Chang replaces Carol Johnson, who said she was retiring two years ago.
“Boston matters,” he said in a statement. “As the birthplace of public education in America, it needs to serve as the model for what public education can be, not only in the United States but the world.’’
The big question: Can he handle the snow and cold?
