Coffee company, Blue Bottle, coming to Boston

Residents of Boston cringe at the nickname “Beantown,” but Boston is apparently full of another type of bean – coffee.

Blue Bottle, a Japanese-stylecoffee roaster based in San Francisco, is coming toBoston, where Dunkin’ Donuts, created in nearby Quincy, Massachusetts, reigns. The company has it’s sights set on theCambridge/Harvard Square neighborhood on Bow Street.

“The coffee is getting better,” President and Chief Executive Bryan Meehan said, Boston Globe reported.“[Boston’s]got a rich coffee heritage. Home of Dunkin’ Donuts, that’s got to mean something.”

The Boston store will be one of five cafés set to open late-summer 2017, including new ventures in Washington D.C. and Miami.

Blue Bottle has a stronghold in San Francisco’s Bay Area and has stores in Los Angeles and New York City; the company has expanded as far as Tokyo.

“But we like Boston for its academic, literary nature; the brownstone- and tree-lined streets of Cambridge; the crisp New England air in fall,”Meehan and Blue BottlefounderJames Freeman wrote on the company’s blog.

A 15,000-square-foot facility in Brooklyn, New York, will supply Boston with coffee beans, where it will be roasted, ground and served the next day, the Globe reported.

According to the Globe, if Apple is the leader in technology, then Blue Bottle is the Apple of coffee.
