Michelle Obama was a featured guest at an event hosted by Klick Health’s MUSE New York Tuesday for professionals and researchers in the medical, healthcare and pharmaceutical industries — and in usual Michelle Obama fashion, she had advice about all facets of life.
At the event, which featured a performance from Sheryl Crow, the former first lady talked about making “medicine less intimidating” for people, the future of America as it stands for our youngest generation as well as the topic of social media use.
“I have people Snapchat for me,” Obama said. “I tweet by committee. I don’t tweet off the top of my head. Which is a good lesson for kids! Run your tweets by your crew. Spell check. Grammar check.”
“I think kids do think telling it like it is and talking off the top of your head [is cool] … [but] that’s never been good,” Obama continued, according to PEOPLE. “We weren’t raised like that. That’s rude. That’s what you call rude.”
“But yes, I use social media,” she added. “But I use it like a grownup.”
Though subtle, the comment targets our current president for his erratic, unfiltered tweets — ones that have been widely criticized and have given the public, like former White House photographer Pete Souza, the perfect ammo to clap back.
It wouldn’t be the first time Obama has supposedly alluded to Trump’s irresponsible tweeting.
“You don’t tweet every thought,” she said late last year when addressing the Obama Foundation Summit in Chicago. Though she said she wasn’t “talking about anybody in particular” since “everybody does that,” (and she certainly doesn’t seem like the type of person to directly throw shade because, as she would put it, “when they go low, we go high”) the remark was made and a jab seemed within reason.
Barack has made similar statements about using social media responsibly in the past. “Michelle was giving the general idea … that don’t say the first thing that pops in your head,” he stated at the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit in New Delhi last December. “Have a little bit of an edit function.”
Their message is quite simple: think before you tweet.
And if you’re posting to Twitter and you’re the President of the United States, it’s safe to say you should be extra careful. Or, you know, “like, really smart.” (Cue the appropriate Trump clapback via Souza.)
