Gas leak causes 5-hour shutdown of Government Center

A gas leak prompted the evacuation of the Government Center, which was shut down for nearly five hours Monday morning.

Construction crews punctured a 6-inch underground gas line just after 8 a.m. while working in front of 10 Tremont St.

Gas leaked into the basements of surrounding buildings and the area around Court, Somerset and Sudbery streets was shut down as a precaution, CBS reported.

The streets reopened to traffic at about 12:30 p.m., WCVB reported.

Workers spent hours capping the leak and firefighters ventilated buildings.

National Grid was on scene and most of the gas appeared to be ventilating into the atmosphere. Firefighters were monitoring air quality.

People are advised to steer clear of the area until streets reopened, as traffic will likely be impacted.
