Not everyone has a backyard or a place to grill. And, sometimes you can’t be bothered with sweating it out over the grill on sunny summer’s day. But we’ve all got friends —hungry friends, in theory.
That’s just fine; let the experts do all the work for you this Fourth of July. Whether you eat in, take out or have your BBQ treats delivered, these places have you covered.
You don’t have to wait until the weekend or the Fourth to get your barbecue fix. Just a week old, Kendall Square’s Smoke Shop celebrates its first Fourth, and its first week with all-day food service. The new restaurant is courtesy of Tremont 647 Chef and owner, Andy Husbands, who has made a name for himself around the competitive barbecue circuit as part of the Blue Ribbon championship team, IQUE BBQ. (So he probably knows his way around a grill and smoker by now.) Smoke Shop opens for its new regular hours on the Fourth and the whole menu will be available, but Husbands plans to cook up a brisket special. Commonwealth Restaurant, another Kendall Square noshery, is closed on the Fourth, but makes up for it with a weekend BBQ Blowout, Saturday and Sunday. Chef and owner Nookie Postal’s menu includes meats smoked in his Lang 84 using oak and peach tree wood. The menu includes sausage, short ribs, beef back ribs, pulled chopped beef, pastrami and brown sugar-brined turkey breast. Among the sides, these sound irresistible: slow-cooked green beans with garlic flower buds and red chilis, collards with smoked oxtail and sweet and sour slaw with ramen and sesame. End with a Southern-style sweet: peach cobbler with vanilla ice cream. The menu is available for dine-in, take-out or delivery if you have enough self-control to stash it away the night before. On Sunday only, at Somerville’s Bergamot, Chef and owner Keith Pooler will fire up the grill for a family style barbecue, and is offering the menu for takeout, too. This BBQ pop-up is a ticketed meal with three seatings, or pre-order takeout, which means no walk-ins. A ticket grants a taste of everything —chopped salad, smoked Texas-style brisket, slow-cooked chopped pork, Texas “Scott” link sausages, and those tasty fixin’s, including Corn Bread with miso maple butter. What with parts of Memorial Drive shut down at 4 p.m. on the Fourth, the Hyatt Regency Cambridge’s Fourth Party on the River makes for a great spot for some pre fireworks barbecue. Located adjacent to the Charles River, just up from the Esplanade, there will be lawn games, DJ Adam 12 spinning, a cash bar, and barbecue favorites like burgers, hot dogs, corn, and sausage: very down-home style.
