‘If everybody hates it then I’ll deal with that:’ Claire Foy on playing The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Claire Foy on Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

Last month it was confirmed that Claire Foy had been cast as Lisbeth Salander in the upcoming “Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” sequel, “The Girl In The Spider’s Web,” which will be directed by “Don’t Breathe’s” Fede Alvarez.

Considering the impact that playing the character had on the careers of both Noomi Rapace and Rooney Mara, and the acclaim that they received, too, Foy could be forgiven for being more than a little nervous about starring in the film. But when I spoke to Foy earlier this week about both “Breathe” and her upcoming role as Lisbeth Salander the British actress was actually completely calm about it.

“I think with anything that’s this big, you could go, ‘There’s too much pressure to get it right.’ But all I can be is myself. That’s all I’ve got. I actually can’t do anything else. I can’t make myself like anyone else. Or do a performance like anyone else. My plan is to do a performance for me. And if everybody hates it then I’ll deal with that. But at least I’ll know that it’s me who has done it.”

“It’s a huge challenge,” continued Foy. “She’s a really extraordinary character. I’m really interested in exploring the real humanity of her. And not just accept that she has these set of characteristics and she has piercings and just decide to write her off. My job, and what I’m really excited about, is getting to know her and, dear god, what a life has been written for her. Understanding that, and making sense in my brain, is what I’m really looking forward to. Because there is nowhere to hide with that. It’s all dark.”

Foy has a couple more weeks to prepare for the film, as production on “The Girl In The Spider’s Web” will begin in Berlin and Stockholm in January, ahead of the film being released on October 19, 2018.
