Why this East Village church is baking over 50,000 holiday cookies

This East Village church could even please Cookie Monster.

St. Nicholas of Myra Orthodox Church, located at 288 E. 10th St., is having its eighth annual Cookie Walk next month, where the institution’s “Cookie Team” will bake more than 50,000 handmade holiday cookies. They will include 75 varieties “using the finest ingredients,” according to the church.

The massive bake sale is to be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Dec. 10 and from noon to 3 p.m. on Dec. 11. Participants can choose from a 1-pound or 3-pound box, costing $15 and $35 each.

The idea is to “take a walk” through the tables of cookies and fill the box with as many baked goods as possible. There are only two rules: No sampling and the lid must be able to fully close. Also, cookies can sell out early, so come Saturday if possible.

Admission is free and so is a Little Elves Bakery & Workshop where children 10 and under can create their own holiday treats.

The giant bake sale has apparently been so popular with locals that one resident who moved to Long Island returned to get a box of cookies, according to the church.
