Woman fends off would-be assailant in Washington Heights apartment

Woman fends off would-be assailant in Washington Heights apartment

A 33-year-old woman fended off a man who tried to sexually assault her as she walked through her apartment door in Washington Heights, police said.

NYPD is on the lookout for the suspect, who investigators said followed the woman into her apartment building on West 172nd Street on early Saturday morning.

Cops said the assailant, described only as a black man, followed the woman into her elevator at around 1 a.m. and waited for her to step off the building.

He then followed her as she opened the front door of her apartment when he suddenly jumped on her and attempted to rape her, officials said Wednesday.

The woman successfully fought her attacker off without any reported injuries, got into her apartment and locked the door behind her.

Security video footage of the suspect shows the man wearing a short-sleeved red shirt, dark pants, a baseball cap with a red brim and a backpack.
