NFL rumors: Giants sign S Michael Thomas

The New York Giants have signed veteran safety Michael Thomas to a two-year contract on Monday, as first reported by NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero

Thomas has spent all five of his NFL seasons with the Miami Dolphins after being signed as an undrafted free agent by the San Francisco 49ers, where he spent his rookie season on the practice squad.

In Miami, the 29-year-old was used more as a special teams contributor than he was a defensive back. He racked up 147 total tackles, one interception and six passes defended.

Last year he appeared in 64-percent of the Dolphins’ special teams snaps compared to just 14-percent of defensive snaps.

But he has excelled on the special-teams circuit, recording 55 solo tackles over the last four years, which is tied for the most in the NFL during that span.

Strengthening New York’s lacking special teams department looks to be a priority of new general manager Dave Gettleman. This offseason, he’s already brought on other defensive backs in Teddy  Williams, B.W. Webb and Duke Riley who will likely see time on the special teams unit as well.
