A fisherman discovered a human skull floating in Jamaica Bay off the coast of Queens early Tuesday morning.

Police say the man was fishing in the Shellbank Basin, behind the Surfside Motel on Cross Bay Boulevard in Howard Beach, at about 8:48 a.m. when he discovered the skull.

The discovery comes three weeks after a couple fishing in the same area discovered the headless body of Lukasz Mikolajewicz, a 46-year-old Ozone Park man. A noose was discovered off the Cross Bay Bridge, and police suspect that Mikolajewicz hung himself, with his head apparently detaching from his body in the process.

Police spokesperson Detective Arlene Muniz could not immediately confirm whether the skull belonged to Mikolajewicz. The incident remains under investigation by police and the city’s Medical Examiner.
