A new take on escape rooms is set to open in Massachusetts this winter.
Skeleton Key will open its doors in Lynnfield later this season, a food-meets-puzzles concept by Muse Paintbar co-founder and former Harvard Business School marketing professor Ray Weaver along with BeSide Digital. After debuting in the Bay State, the experiment is scheduled to expand with locations in West Hartford, Conn., and White Plains, N.Y.
The Skeleton Key website promises visitors a “spellbinding atmosphere,” along with entertaining puzzle games, plus food and drink options. An “Adventure Emporium” lounge will have craft cocktails, beer and wine available, as well as snack offerings for guests to munch on as they explore a collection of curiosities and “unusual objects.”
The Skeleton Key will also have three types of games based on different themes where teams will be required to crack codes and solve puzzles in order to escape a room in time.
One of the games, titled “Starry Night,” involves analyzing a “vintage London phone booth” and several street items to find the key to entering a “replica of the Tate Modern” in order to pull off a heist. Another game called “Virus” involves tracking a virus as it spreads its way through cities, and finding an antidote for it.
In the third puzzle offering, “Scarab,” teams must explore an Egyptian bazaar to find a magical amulet that must be returned to “the mummy’s sarcophagus to end an evil curse.”
And don’t worry about getting stuck, as hints will be “delivered from beyond” for those who need them.
