A former Uber driver charged with raping a passenger in December evaded authorities for almost a decade in a slew of other sexual assaults in South Boston and the Esplanade along the Charles River.

Suffolk County District Attorney Dan Conley said that DNA evidence, witness statements and “unmistakeable patterns of conduct” linked Alejandro Done, 46, of the South End with at least four instances of sexual assault. Each of these instances involved women who were walking alone on weekends during the summer months. He described these random attacks as vicious and predatory acts from a dangerous person.

The instances took place on July 29, 2006 in Joe Moakely Park in South Boston, June 16, 2007 Esplanade, July 27, 2007 at the Esplanade, July 13, 2009 at the Esplanade and June 23, 2009 at Prebble Circle in South Boston.

“When you see five instances, four linked with DNA and others under investigation, where someone who does this half a dozen times, they are a very dangerous, violent sexual predator,” Conley said.

Authorities finally got a break on Monday when they entered his DNA into the National DNA Index.

“Over the years, while we did not identify the person who did this, we never forgot that several women have been horribly victimized,” State Police Colonel Richard McKeon said.

“We got a dangerous felon off the street who preyed on people on the Esplanade and in South Boston,” Boston Police Commissioner Bill Evans said. “In 2006, it made the community on edge and we were never able to solve what had happened in Moakley Park. We never gave up on this case. Someone might get away with something today or tomorrow, but when we have victims who are assaulted so viciously, it’s good to know that we never give up.”

Done, who has no prior criminal record, is expected to be arraigned on Wednesday.
