You spent time and hard-earned money picking out the perfect presents for everyone on your list. Now it’s time to find out if what you gave is about to be sent back to the shops. The Daily Mail reports that almost half of all women return Christmas presents their husbands gave them. It’s not because they necessarily hate it; most of the time it’s because their husbands didn’t know their right size.

The paper goes on to state that in fact wrong sized clothes is the number one reason why gift receivers don’t keep what they’ve been given. MarketTools also reports that clothes are the most returned gift item; clothes and shoes make up 62 percent of all holiday returns.

The same report found that home goods are the next most popular items to be returned, followed by beauty and fragrance products and then electronics. It seems people would just rather have the cash or store credit than these items.

So with all these returns, what exactly are people keeping? Jewelry and watches ranked lowest on the list of returns conjuring up the theory that what people want most in a Christmas gift is at least a hint of sentimentality.
