Students exercised their First Amendent rights on Wednesday by staging walkouts in protest of Donald Trump’s win over Hillary Clinton on Tuesday night, including two San Franciso-area high schools. Walkouts were staged at Bishop O’Dowd High School in Oakland andBerkeley High School starting that morning, according to local stationKTVU, which was live streaming the protest.
“He wants us to turn against each other,” a female student, who was nearly in tears, told KTVU. “I just want to emphasize that as young people it’s our job to continue to fight like our parents fought for us.”
Protests and walkouts were also staged by students from the University of Texas and by high school students in Bolder, Colorado, Phoenix, and Seattle.
Protests against Trump broke out inCalifornia’s Bay Area late on Tuesday after the Republican candidate won the U.S. presidential election, a Reuters witness and local media reported.
Demonstrators set fire to a likeness of Trump, smashed store front windows and set garbage and tires on fire in downtown Oakland, across the bay from San Francisco. A few miles away, University ofCalifornia, Berkeley students protested on campus.
A demonstration also unfolded at the University ofCalifornia, Davis where students blocked streets as they marched and chanted anti-Trump slogans and “You are not America, we are America,” according to Twitter posts.
One protester in Oakland was struck by a vehicle after blocking a highway, local media reported.
Rallies are also organized in several major cities Wednesday night, including Boston,New York Cityand Philadelphia. -Reuters and Kimberly M. Aquilina contributed to this report
