Will there be a sequel to ‘Sierra Burgess Is A Loser’? Here’s what Shannon Purser told us

RJ Cryer and Shannon Purser

Shannon Purser has revealed that discussions have already been held over a possible sequel to Sierra Burgess Is A Loser, but insisted that it is up to Netflix and the amount of views the film ultimately gets.

The “Stranger Things” actress, who stars as the titular character in the modern re-telling of “Cyrano De Bergerac,” responded to my question regarding my sequel with, “I think it was something that we kind of talked about.”

“But not seriously. Not in the sense that we are joking, but in the sense that we just don’t know how the movie will do yet and if people would want that. But I think that we would all very much be up for it and be interested in it.”

As Sierra Burgess, an outcast at high school, Purser has to team up with Kristine Froseth’s Veronica, the most popular cheerleader, so that they can try and win over their crushes.

The rest of the article contains huge SPOILERS for “Sierra Burgess Is A Loser,” specifically when it comes to the end of the romantic-comedy.

So please don’t read ahead if you’re yet to watch the latest Netflix release. You have been warned.

Come the end of “Sierra Burgess” she ultimately lands Jamey (Noah Centineo), who had previously been contacting her under the impression that it was Veronica, as he realizes that he fell in love with their endless chats over the phone.

Right before the credits the audience is informed that Sierra got into Stanford with straight A’s, and that “she and Jamey are making it work long distance. They’re pretty good over the phone.”

Meanwhile, the film also revealed that “Jamey got a football scholarship to UCLA and teaches sign language in his spare time.”

During our conversation I asked Purser whether these additional tidbits might be explored in more detail in a possible sequel.

“I think it would be really fun to explore Sierra’s life in college and what it is like to be a little bit more grown up, and to be separated, and having to navigate relationships that way. That would be really fun to play with.”

“Sierra Burgess Is A Loser” is now on Netflix.
