State Troopers Paul Copponi and Daniel Mahoney along with Framingham Fire/EMS came through in the clutch when they delivered a baby on I-90 east on Saturday evening.

A 32-year-old Fitchburg woman called 911 from the side of the road as she went into labor about 7:53 p.m.

Copponi arrived on scene first, where the woman was seated in the driver’s seat of a car still in drive, breathing heavily and asking for help. There were three other children in the car and Copponi had to help the woman put the car in park. He calmed the woman, telling her that EMS were on their way and everything was going to be fine. At this point, the baby started crowning. Copponi cradled the child’s head as Mahoney arrived and took care of the three young passengers.

The Fire/EMS arrived right on time, as the baby boy was born a few moments later. A member of the Framingham EMS cut the umbilical cord and put the mother and newborn in the ambulance. They were taken to Metro West Framingham Hospital.
