Royal fashion: Kate Middleton’s post-baby floral dress

The Duchess of Cambridge went for floral radiance as she and husband Prince William presented their daughter to the world outside the Lindo Wing hospital. Kate bloomed in a fresh buttercup-printed dress from one of her favorite British designers Jenny Packham. The yellow-and-white number was paired with nude heels, probably from her trusted brand L.K. Bennett.

Alex Longmore, British celebrity stylist and style expert, who worked with the likes of Claudia Schiffer, Dannii Minogue, and royal family member Zara Phillips, gives Metro her insight on Kate’s look.

On the dress

“It’s a very pretty dress and it’s very clever because the flowers are blooming and yellow was a good color, especially if you don’t know what sex the baby is, which she said she didn’t. It’s quite unbelievable how beautiful she looks. She has probably been up all night since she went to the hospital at 6am. Her choice is actually unusual as she doesn’t wear patterns that often, she is more into color block.”

On the shoes

“I think she’d look much better with black shoes, her nude pumps look a bit dated with the outfit. They aren’t doing her legs any favors. I imagine she must be very chilly, it’s quite cold in London today!”

On the shape of the dress

“It’s a very flattering shape. Last time her post-baby tummy was much more obvious. This time the baby’s shawl is cleverly covering her mid-waist. The hem of the dress could have just been an inch shorter to show her lovely legs. The length is slightly unflattering, but goodness, she has just had a baby! She looks pretty spectacular!”

Her hair and makeup

“She obviously has had her hair and makeup done. She went for a kind of ‘coiffeured’ look. She really looks like a woman in control.”

2015 vs. 2013

“I think she got much smarter this time compared to when Baby George was born. That dress in 2013 [blue polka dot dress] was, in a weird way, more appropriate to leaving hospital but this time she has gone for a much more glamorous and mature look. With George, she looked like a young girl who just had a baby. Now she looks like she is at a royal engagement. She is dressing the part of being a princess.”

What about Prince William?

“I wish he wasn’t wearing that bright royal blue jumper! With Kate’s outfit, a paler baby blue would have looked better. Subconsciously it’s making a very strong statement: George was wearing a matching outfit and it really looked like, ‘We are the boys of the family.’ I think it’s nice not seeing William in a suit, he looks nicely relaxed. But she looks much smarter than he does!”
