The GPS apps on smartphones are a life-saver for directionally challenged folks scurrying through the labyrinth of street layout in the Greater Boston Area. But navigating the T has proven to be a game of chance on many platforms.

Apple Maps on the iOS 9 is hoping to provide some much needed digital cartography,Apple said.

The maps come complete with detailed routes, station entrances and exits marked by stairs, elevators and escalators, estimated times of arrival and schedules for the train lines, bus routes, Amtrak and ferry ports. It even includes lists of nearby restaurants, bars, shopping centers and points of interest.

The program launched on Monday.

Transit information in Maps is now available in Boston, Baltimore, Berlin, Chicago, London, Mexico City, New York City, Philadelphia, the San Francisco Bay Area, Toronto and Washington D.C., as well as over 300 cities in China, including Beijing, Chengdu and Shanghai.
