Best news ever: Coffee undoes alcohol damage, says new study

If your Friday morning — and Saturday, and Sunday for that matter — routine is chugging coffee in an attempt to cure your hangover from the night before, then you’re doing life right. At least according to a new study by the World Cancer Research Fund.

Researchers found that coffee can reduce the risk of liver cancer, which is caused by drinking too much alcohol. The caveat, however, is that the effects were only seen in heavy drinkers, and science has already proven that being a heavy drinker is not at all good for your health. (The fact that excessive drinking has been linked to heart failure, strokes, high blood pressure and some forms of cancer is a total buzzkill.)

Another study conducted at theKaiser Permanente Division of Research in Oakland, Calif.found similar findings of coffee undoing alcohol’s damage, according to NBC. Researchers found that one cup of coffee a day cut the risk of alcohol cirrhosis by 20 percent, and four cups of coffee a day reduced the risk by 80 percent. Of course, researchers pointed out that the best way to not get alcohol cirrhosis was to cut down on drinking alcohol, not by drinking alcohol and then chugging coffee. Sorry for partying.
