Everything to know about a potential Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life 2

Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life 2

In 2016, Netflix brought us back to Stars Hollow with the speed-talking, coffee-crazed duo of Rory and Lorelai Gilmore. Four feature-length episodes — one for each season, starting with winter and ending with spring — followed them through a year’s worth of change. (Yes, matriarch Emily Gilmore was included, too.) But what about Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life 2?

Over a decade after its season 7 finale in 2007, the last episode of this coveted revival ended with Rory’s surprise pregancy (surprise!).

As Entertainment Tonight’s Philiana Ng put it: “The father of the baby is unknown given that she had an open relationship with her ex-boyfriend, Logan; had an underwhelming boyfriend named Paul and also had a one-night stand with a man dressed in a Wookiee costume.”

Man, we really need a Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life 2 after that cliffhanger.

In fact, the last lines went:

Rory: “Mom?”

Lorelai: “Yeah.”

Rory: “I’m pregnant.”

That’s it — cut to black.

Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life 2 release date

Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life 2 is still up in the air — there’s no release date yet. But, year after year, Netflix says they want in.

After the premiere of the Gilmore Girls revival, the streaming company sent out a cryptic tweet that teased the possibility of Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life 2.

They altered a photo from a previous episode where April, Luke’s daughter, conducts a science fair project to find out who her father is. This new photo showed the different men who could have fathered Rory’s baby.

And, though Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino told TVLine in December 2016, “The old adage is you always want to leave them wanting more” — and further told the Hollywood Reporter that she and the production team “went into this sort of saying that this was it” — Netflix is reportedly all for a second go-around.

In March 2017, Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos told UK’s Press Association that “very preliminary” talks for more episodes were underway.

Then, this July, Cindy Holland, VP of Original Content at Netflix, said of Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life 2, “We haven’t discussed it at all. But [Sherman-Palladino] knows that we are very big fans of Gilmore Girls.”

Ultimately, it’s up to Sherman-Palladino, who is currently focused on Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. However, TVLine reports that her contract with Amazon includes an “out” clause that would allow her and husband Dan Palladino to work on Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life 2 for Netflix.

Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life 2 cast

We definitely know that Netflix is on board with Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life 2. And, if a second revival comes around, the original cast will most likely be on board as well.

Back in 2016 at the Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life premiere, Alexis Bledel (Rory) told ET that it all depends on the story. A year later, she gave TVLine the same answer, adding: “I’m just interested in telling a story that is dynamic and that I can hook into.”

Lauren Graham (Lorelai) revealed to TVLine in April 2017 that she’d “play that character until my dying day.”

In fact, when she got news about Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, she told IndieWire that she signed on without reading any of the scripts.

Since there’s no official Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life 2 release date (fingers crossed), a trailer isn’t available yet either. First, let’s hope another revival is announced soon.

Until then — whenever that may be — the question remains: will there be a Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life 2?

Graham acknowledged to IndieWire last June that she understands how much the show means to fans (and we demand more because you can’t just leave us with a cliffhanger like that!).

“As much as the show means to me, it possibly means even more to the people who love it,” she said. “They’ve re-watched it many times, they’ve taken it with them to a different age, they’ve shown it to their kids. You can’t ever escape it, and my feeling now is that you shouldn’t try.”
