Man survives jump from RFK bridge

A man who jumped off the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge on Thursday survived the plunge and was rescued from the water, police said.

The man, described to be in his 30s, was observed climbing over a fence and approaching the edge of the RFK Bridge at about 11:20 a.m., according to police. After standing at the edge momentarily, the man jumped into the water below, falling a distance of 55 feet.

Within minutes, responding officers Martin Kliche, Brian Kearney and Pete Martinez maneuvered a Harbor Launch water vessel and threw out a life ring to the man, who was “compliant” during the rescue, authorities said.

Police said the man “looked liked he was in need of psychiatric care.”

He was taken to shore on Randall’s Island and transported to Harlem Hospital where he is said to be in stable condition.
