Noah Syndergaard pulled from Mets game with blister on middle finger

New York Mets ace Noah Syndergaard lived up to the hype on Opening Day against the Atlanta Braves, but it ended earlier than expected.

After six innings in which he blanked the Braves, gave up five hits and struck out seven on just 86 pitches, Syndergaard was pulled.

Upon his arrival in the Mets dugout after the sixth inning, SNY cameras zoomed in on a blistered right middle fingeron Syndergaard’s pitching hand.

An update on his status will likely be offered after Monday’s game.

While blisters aren’t normally cause for alarm, Syndergaard’s importance to the staff and the team’s past health issues made it imperative to practice extreme caution with the ace.

Syndergaard would have likely only pitched one more inning anyway had his pitch count rose near the 100 mark. Therefore it wasn’t a necessity to risk further damage with 161 more games to go in the season.

Hansel Robles came in and shut the Braves down in the top of the seventh before the Mets finally broke through with their first runs of the year in the bottom of the frame.

Thor’s time on the mound was dazzling, however. His two-seam fastball was as lively as ever; touching the 100 mile-per-hour mark and his slider was just as daunting, topping out around 94 miles per hour.

He also unveiled his new changeup, which at 90 miles per hour, is difficult to label as off-speed. But an almost 10 mile-per-hour difference alongside its ability to ride in on right-handed batters can make it a knockout option for Syndergaard this year.
