Since the Supreme Court’s landmark decision to legalize sports betting in New Jersey this past May, the sports gambling industry has continued to see booming growth on a national scale.
Ever since that announcement, Mississippi legalized sports betting and West Virginia recently followed suit, opening up its gambling on sports as well. They join Delaware and of course Nevada —home to the gambling hub of Las Vegas —as areas that are considered full-scale legalized sports betting states.
And this could be just the beginning.

Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and New York as states that are in the “on-deck circle” of becoming legalized sports betting states. ESPN additionally reported that sports gambling in Rhode Island can begin as soon as October 1 and in Pennsylvania some time before the end of the year.
As far as New York, ESPN reported that legislation that would have gave sports betting the green light failed just this past June, but can be re-introduced in 2019. Perhaps its neighbor New Jersey getting the job done before it will help light some fire under New York’s urgency to do the same.

The remainder of the states haven’t gotten the ball rolling on any legalization activity … yet. And there’s an emphasis on “yet,” as the millions of dollars that can be pumped into the state’s revenue due to sports gambling may have these states changing their minds soon.
The one state where legalizing gambling is probably unlikely? Utah. ESPN pointed out how the state’s anti-gambling statue is cemented into its constitution. So, the chances of being able to bet on a Utah Jazz game in the future are probably slim to none.
All this being said, there’s a great chance that most of the country will offer legal sports betting by 2020, even if they have to overcome legislation red tape that hinders the process.
