Asian boat people came ashore

Thousands of migrants and refugees from Bangladesh and Myanmar have finally been taken in by Malaysia and Indonesia. They had been getting hungry and ill after being set adrift on boats in South East Asian seas after being abandoned by smugglers following a Thai crackdown on human trafficking. Until now, nobody really wanted to take responsibility for them.

California’s coast was polluted by an oil leak

At least 21,000 gallons of crude oil has created a four-mile slick along the California coastline. Authorities have closed Refugio State Beach as the clear up begins.

Carmakers recalled record number of cars

Auto manufacturers including Honda, Nissan and Toyota are calling in cars that use potentially deadly air bags by Japanese company Takata, bringing the total in the U.S. recall to almost 34 million cars. It’s the country’s largest-ever automotive recall.

LA gave minimum wage workers a raise

The city voted to increase the minimum wage to $15 by 2020, like San Francisco and Seattle have already done. The move is set to improve the earnings of 800,000 workers in the city.

Cement dried on The Rock’s star status

Dwayne Johnson imprinted his hands and feet on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame. The beefy star thanked Steven Spielberg, who had sent him a surprise celebratory note ahead of the ceremony.
