An NYPD sergeant was killed and another sergeant wounded while responding to a home invasion in the Bronx on Friday, according to NYPD.
Sgt. Paul Tuzzolo, a 19-year veteran of the force, was pronounced dead at Jacobi Hospital, where he and Sgt. Emmanuel Kwo were taken after a shootout with the suspect. Kwo is listed in stable condition, according to authorities. The suspect, Manuel Rosales, 35, of Brentwood on Long Island, was killed during the “close quarters” confrontation with police, Police Commissioner James P. O’Neill said during a press conference. Rosales was attempting to break into his estranged wife’s residence on Beach Avenue, where his ex, his 13-year-old son, another 13-year-old child and a 50-year-old woman who called 911 were at the time. Police pursued a red jeep that Rosales was reportedly driving. At 2:53 p.m., officers spotted the car connected to the burglary at Noble Court and Bronx River Avenue. O’Neill said that when officers approached the jeep, Rosales opened started shooting with a .45 caliber semi-automatic handgun. Tuzzolo was shot in the head and Kwo was shot more than 10 times in the leg, according to reports.

Tuzzolo was a union delegate, a husband and father of two. Kwo has been an officer for nine years.
Police said they believe Rosales was living in Suffolk County, New York, where he has 17 prior arrests, the preliminary investigation revealed.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo released a statement: “Every day, the brave men and women of law enforcement selflessly serve our communities to keep the rest of us safe. Today, a sergeant in the New York City Police Department has made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, and another officer is undergoing treatment. “My deepest sympathies are with the families of the officers involved in today’s tragedy in the Bronx, and with Commissioner O’Neill and the NYPD as they cope with the loss of one of their own.”
