The current season of ABC’s award-winning comedy series Modern Family, season 10, is still in progress. Yet rumors of the show’s end have been looming for the past year. These rumors were essentially proven true when the network announced on Tuesday that it had renewed the show for its 11th and final season. In other words, Modern Family season 11 would be the comedy’s last.
Everything to know about Modern Family season 11
“For 10 years, our characters have bravely faced turning points in life and moved through them to great personal enrichment,” said co-creator Christopher Lloyd in a statement. “We have chosen a different path by doing one more season of Modern Family.”
Lloyd’s fellow co-creator and executive producer, Steven Levitan, echoed these sentiments with a joke. “Even after 10 years together, we realized there are still some things our writers don’t yet know about each other’s sex lives.”
To date, Modern Family has garnered five Outstanding Comedy Series Emmy Awards, multiple Screen Actors Guild Awards, a Golden Globe, a Peabody and many other trophies. For the better part of a decade, it has remained one of TV’s top comedy shows and, even in the midst of its 10th season, has shown no signs of slowing down.
“Chris and Steve have created one of the most seminal and iconic comedies in television history,” said ABC Entertainment President Karey Burke. “In its final season, there will be more milestone events that anyone who has been a fan of the series won’t want to miss.”
Modern Family season 11 cast
Nearly two full months before Tuesday’s announcement, speculation about a potential Modern Family season 11 was given credence by a Deadline report regarding the principal cast’s efforts to secure new deals with 20th Century FOX TV. Ed O’Neill, Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Eric Stonestreet and Sofia Vergara all managed to secure salary increases worth $500,000 per episode, not to mention a sizeable chunk of the show’s backend and licensing deals. Younger cast members Sarah Hyland, Ariel Winter, Nolan Gould and Rico Rodriguez were also in contract negotiations then, but hadn’t reached a deal just yet,
When will Modern Family season 11 premiere?
Since the show has remained so popular, why are Lloyd and Levitan ending it with Modern Family season 11? A precise reason wasn’t given in the press release and ABC didn’t offer too many details aside from this. Even so, it makes sense that after 10 years working on the same program, everyone involved would eventually want to wrap things up and move on to other projects.
An official release date for Modern Family season 11 hasn’t been revealed yet, but season 10 will return Wednesday, Feb. 20 at 9 p.m. ET on ABC.
