Olivia Wilde and the perils of being ‘too sophisticated’

Hollywood has a whole bunch of fun and interesting euphemisms for criticizing actresses for things out of their control, and Olivia Wilde recently learned a new one.

“The funniest thing I heard recently was I had heard for a part that I was too sophisticated,” she tells Howard Stern. “And I was like, Oh, that sounds nice. I like that feedback. I didn’t get the part, but I’m a very sophisticated person. And then I found out later that they actually said ‘old.’ I want to make a translation sheet for Hollywood that’s all the feedback your agents give you and what it really means.”

That film she was too old for, by the way? “Wolf of Wall Street,” for a role that went to Margo Robbie because the then-28 Wilde was too old. But on the bright side, at least she got on Martin Scorcese’s radar: “I did not [have to audition for ‘Vinyl’] because I had auditioned unsuccessfully for ‘Wolf of Wall Street.'”
